Eileen Fischlschweiger

Broward County Library
Librarian
My name is Eileen Fischlschweiger.  I’ve been a librarian with the Broward County Library System for over 30 years.  I’ve been the Patent and Trademark Librarian for the Fort Lauderdale PTRC at the Broward County Main Library since March 1995, and the PTRC Representative since March 1997.  As the PTRC Representative Librarian, I receive annual training by the United States Patent and Trademark Office at their headquarters location in Alexandria, VA.  Due to the length of my service, I have seen many changes, especially involving patents, as they occurred in real time, providing me with a unique perspective and knowledge base on which to draw on in assisting library customers.  I am a member of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association (PTRCA).  I have a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in both Chemistry and Physics and a Master of Arts in Journalism and Communications degree with a specialization in Broadcast Production, both from the University of Florida, a considerable amount of graduate level coursework in Education, and a second Master’s degree in Library Science from Florida State University.

Since its designation as a Patent Depository Library on November 1st, 1984, the Fort Lauderdale PTRC has been located at the Broward County Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Although initially called the Patent Depository Library (PDL), it was later renamed the Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL), and in 2011, the PTDL was rebranded as the Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC), as it is currently known.  From the USPTO press release available at
https://www.uspto.gov/about-us/news-updates/uspto-rebrands-national-library-network-patent-and-trademark-resource-centers, “The name change signifies a major shift in focus from the "paper depository" concept to an expansion of access to electronic information and specialized training to meet the information needs of 21st Century patent and trademark customers.”  More information about the PTRC Program from the USPTO is available athttps://www.uspto.gov/learning-and-resources/support-centers/patent-and-trademark-resource-centers-ptrcs.
